When it comes to controlling canker (trichomoniasis) and other protozoal infections in birds, Metronidazole 200 mg remains one of the most trusted and effective treatments available. Widely used by pigeon fanciers, avian breeders, and bird keepers, this proven medication targets the root cause of infection, helping birds recover quickly while protecting long-term health and performance.
Canker is one of the most common and damaging diseases affecting pigeons and other birds. Left untreated, it can lead to mouth and throat lesions, weight loss, poor appetite, reduced racing performance, and even death. Metronidazole works by eliminating the protozoan parasites responsible for these symptoms, giving birds the chance to heal and return to peak condition.
What Is Metronidazole Used for in Birds?
Metronidazole is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial medication primarily used to treat infections caused by Trichomonas gallinae, the organism responsible for canker. It is also effective against other anaerobic protozoa that affect the digestive tract.
Bird keepers commonly use Metronidazole 200 mg for:
-
Canker (trichomoniasis)
-
Throat, mouth, and crop lesions
-
Loss of appetite and weight caused by protozoal infection
-
Preventive treatments before breeding or racing
-
Recovery after stress, transport, or illness
Because canker spreads easily through shared drinking water, feeding young birds, and close loft contact, fast and effective treatment is critical.
Active Ingredient
Metronidazole – 200 mg per tablet
Metronidazole works by disrupting the DNA of protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, stopping their ability to reproduce and survive. This targeted action makes it highly effective while minimizing unnecessary stress on the bird.
Key Benefits of Metronidazole 200 mg for Birds
✔ Targets the cause of canker directly
✔ Helps clear mouth, throat, and crop lesions
✔ Restores appetite and normal feeding behavior

✔ Ideal for racing, breeding, and young birds
Healthy birds eat better, train harder, and perform stronger. Treating canker early prevents setbacks that can derail an entire season.
Why Canker Control Matters
Canker is often called a “silent performance killer.” Birds may look fine at first, but internally the infection reduces oxygen intake, nutrient absorption, and overall vitality. Racing pigeons may lose speed and endurance, while breeding birds may struggle to feed young properly.
Using Metronidazole at the first sign of symptoms or as part of a planned health program helps maintain:
-
Strong immune response
-
Clean throats and crops
-
Consistent feeding
-
Peak racing and breeding performance
When to Use Metronidazole for Birds
-
At the first signs of canker
-
During routine health checks
-
Before breeding season
-
Before intense training or racing
-
After stress, transport, or loft changes
-
When introducing new birds to the loft
Proactive treatment reduces the risk of outbreaks and keeps your birds competitive year-round.
Easy to Administer
Metronidazole 200 mg tablets can be administered according to recommended avian dosing protocols. Always ensure birds are otherwise healthy and well-hydrated during treatment, and follow best loft hygiene practices to prevent reinfection.
Trusted Treatment for Serious Bird Keepers
